Boost problem on highway

So I just bought a 1991 turbo and when i test drove it it was fine, and for about an hour and a half on the ride home, at which point the check engine light came on, also when it tried to boost, instead of being smooth and blowing off when i let off the throttle it seemed like it was sputtering on the way to boost. psss-pft psspft something like that instead of the regular smooth boosting.
