Timing: Check connector not working

Hi guys, I was trying to check my timing today and when I tried to short the terminals to check codes, the CEL does not flash at all. CEL still comes on normally on acc and cranking, but does not stay on (so no CEL code being detected). Have not tried to start the car with the terminals shorted but I doubt it will work since the CEL won
