4A-GE MK1 Engine Running poorly after tranny swap and timing belt change. [Archive] - Toyota MR2 Message Board

My son and I swapped a newer tranny into his 85 after his 5 gear had crapped out. We did the clutch etc at the same time. While engine was out we did the timing belt, new coil and plug wires. And did normal tune , oil change etc Good news is the car is shifting well..... Bad news is its running poorly. We have a lot of lag when applying throttle , and a lack of responsiveness. Getting above 3000 rpm is very difficult. No major valve noise. No knocking, we have had a few back fires.
