HELP randomly overheats [Archive] - Toyota MR2 Message Board

Have a 87 MR2 that randomly overheats. When it does the gauge runs off the chart immediately. My toyota mechanic thinks that an air pocket is forming around the water pump. New thermostat, radiator. Head gasket was replaced before i bought it. Maybe they did not resurface the head? Any ideas?
