I bought my 1988 MR2 a few months ago, and after addressing a bunch more immediate problems, decided to drain/fill/bleed the slightly gnarly-looking coolant a few weeks ago. Before adding the 50/50 coolant/distilled water mix, I drained what I could from the radiator and refilled with just distilled water, running the engine for a while with the air bleeders opened up.
