what are these metal pieces for? (brakes) [Archive] - Toyota MR2 Message Board

I was getting a VERY annoying squeaking noise coming from the rear brakes. I thought it was the brakes and i ended up changing them and these little metal brackets fell off while replacing brakes. Looks like they were holding the brake pads i guess? What are they for and are they even neccessary? Im pretty sure this was the source of the sqeaky noises cause it looks like it was starting to grind off(see 2nd pic). Same story happened with my other 89
